How many questions should I have in my pulse?

Modified on Mon, 14 Jul at 1:20 PM

Our recommendation is to ask a few questions frequently, rather than many questions at the same time. A pulse with five to eight questions is a good start. With a smaller number of questions, you can more easily focus on the topics you are working with right now, without having too many results to go through at the same time.

The most important is that you have a clear purpose with each survey and that you take time to talk about the results in the teams. A higher number of questions can be overwhelming, and therefore it is preferable to break down surveys into specific topics or to include only the most important questions. It is neither in the survey itself that the solution lies but in the activities that follow. The surveys will show you how the organization is feeling around specific topics, which makes it easier to then talk about and act upon in the teams.

It is currently possible to create a pulse with a maximum of 32 questions, but our recommendation is to have as few questions as possible and rather measure more frequently. By measuring more frequently, you’ll be able to follow trends and detect changes in your team or organization.

With a smaller number of questions, it is also easier to follow up with in-depth questions without risking that the recipients get tired of answering.

If you decide to create your own questions you can also divide the questions using the question templates that have sub-questions, this way you can get more information in the same question.

Remember!

  • Have a clear purpose
  • Focus on one area at a time, divide the question into sub-questions if necessary
  • Create or select questions that are relevant to your organization
  • Follow up on the results frequently
